Joint statement on Westlands sports and leisure complex

Finmeccanica – AgustaWestland, South Somerset District Council and Yeovil Town Council met on Friday 5th June 2015 to discuss the future of the Westlands sports and leisure complex. This follows the announcement by AgustaWestland on 12th May 2015 that it planned to close the facility at the end of September 2015.

AgustaWestland agreed to work with South Somerset District Council (SSDC) and Yeovil Town Council (YTC) to carry out a feasibility appraisal to assess the viability of SSDC or another organisation operating the site and continuing to provide a range of sports and leisure facilities for the overall benefit of the community. AgustaWestland will support SSDC in performing the study, which is expected to be completed by the end of July 2015. The report will then need to be considered by both the SSDC executive and AgustaWestland Board.

Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council said “I don’t want to raise expectations at this stage. The Council is very aware of the importance and value of the facilities at Westlands sports and leisure complex, and I am pleased that AgustaWestland and Yeovil Town Council have agreed to work together with us to assess the options.”

Mike Lock, Mayor of Yeovil Town Council said “The council has received a lot of letters expressing concern at the loss of the facility and the impact its closure will have on entertainment and sports activities in the town. We are therefore delighted that AgustaWestland has indicated their openness for another party to potentially operate the site and will ensure we play our part in supporting AgustaWestland.”
